You're right. I saw the writing on the wall and retired early rather than watch everything turn to shit. For a while I continued as a hobby on my home acreage until it got too expensive to continue.

From what I hear from my friends and former colleagues that is exactly what happened. Our little company was crushed by the big multi nationals. I was very lucky. Because of my early retirement I only have good memories of my career. I've been gone for nine years now and every government and private entity has done everything they can to destroy a business that could have fed a huge portion of the world not to mention life long jobs for people.

I guess I'm extremely fortunate in that for most of my life I was involved in a job for which I had nothing less than a passion. I remember once when I was conducting a tour of our facility and had a visitor say to me with incredulity in his voice. "Wow! You actually really enjoy what you're doing." I remember at the time thinking why wouldn't I enjoy it. After all what would be the point of doing it if I didn't? I knew several people in the same field who were as exuberant as I was. Maybe we were just lucky.

I was in the aquaculture business and I was growing fish for a living. Every day I could wake up a see the little ones developing . It was like magic watching them transform. Eventually we went into research trying to improve methods of husbandry. It was so totally fascinating because every day you could learn something new. No two days were ever the same.

I was just telling my friend that there's basically only two kinds of ethical passive gains, farming and electricity. That's sounds pretty amazing and wholesome. I'm glad you had that experience. These days though you'd constantly be attacked by corruption and larger greed. The ever present paperclip maximizer of enshitification.
