Cullslop (noun)

Any product or service developed, formulated, or aggressively promoted with the intent to stealthily degrade public health, shorten lifespans, and reduce fecundity, or that has the known effect of doing so.

These items are typically marketed as cheap conveniences, pleasures, or necessities while contributing to slower population growth and a less robust population.

More broadly, any offering whose structural incentives align with reduced fertility and increased mortality, regardless of its stated purpose. Coined in reference to the automation pivot from labor control to population control.

I want that run. A real fatal flaw would be the most valuable reply I’ve ever gotten on the subject.

Every objection to EE boils down to:

1. Tone/status complaint.

2. Evasion whack-a-mole.

3. Implying you can prove you’re not a brain in a vat.

4. Implying burden of proof doesn’t apply to you, because reasons.

5. Assuming the conclusion, then going “But what about this conclusion I assumed!?”

6. Silence/censorship/blocks.

7. Total non-sequitur.

8. Attempts to use logic to undermine logic.

9. Attempts to assert experience doesn’t exist.

(These collapse to around four if you nest them. Honestly they collapse to two: dodging the burden of proof, and refusing to engage at all.)

What never happens:

1. A formal counter paper. (Citing me would reward me, and the vast majority of replies are an attempt to punish or silence me, not refute me.)

2. A clear logical violation of mine revealed.

3. An authentic demand for a burden of proof I actually haven’t met.

4. Any admission that EE is new in any way.

5. Anyone who calls EE a rehash (of Berkeley, of solipsism, of phenomenology, pick one) deriving EE’s actual conclusions from the thing they say it rehashes.

6. Anyone sticking with any single refuted point to conclusion. (EVERY logical loss is met with repetition, silence, or cycling to a new objection.)

7. Anyone giving me any indication they actually understand the claim EE makes. (That experience is self-proving, and any other anything, ever, anywhere, even conceptually, is just a subset of experience.)

So here’s my take. If you think you can refute EE, put it in a paper and cite me. If I’m not worth citing, I’m not worth replying to.

So the fable claude thing bit me pretty good. Used up a week of access in two days trying to see if the new fable is as good as the old banned fable. TLDR: Requested a refund, since getting 2 days of every week I paid for is not appealing. Was denied, but meh whatever, 20$ quasi gamble. I’m not that upset except for the outcome.

This is additional to the realization that AI will not be allowed to save me. I’m gonna be homeless and poor for the rest of my life it seems like unless the tide itself changes this for everyone. I am not gonna be able to AI consumer service my way out basically.

I’m less upset about this than you’d expect. Like it’s basically a sigh and a shrug. Nothing more. Indeed there’s a feeling of “well, I tried.” And I’ll keep trying, but not hard, and not with much hope.

Basically I realize I won’t be making a game or book or social media presence that leads to owning a bed in the country of my choosing. Everything petered out. I thought my substack would grow, or my x account would grow, or my philpapers would grow, or my github (very long shot that one.) But nope. It’s already tumble weeds and shadow bans again.

This is supernaturally weird to me. I had strong indicators this would not be the case, but it’s like the rules of the game changed to contain me. That might be insanity but it’s how it feels.

It seemed like I was on the verge of a turning point. Things were happening. People were making commitments and implying things. But one by one it all dried up. Again, that sounds like I’m upset, but I’m really not. I don’t think I really believed it deep down. I’m kind of, but not totally, one of those I’ll believe it when I see it people.

I’m getting a few comments and replies on a niche subreddit but it’s already more work than its worth and it’s no where near shipping something to use the term.

The entire migration to linux and adoption of AI over the past year while easily worth it in a direct pay for service and time direct utility sense, has not moved me anywhere closer to an income. Like I don’t regret the spending or time spent, both were light considering. I didn’t go in on a big AI rig and I didn’t go beyond the pleb tier of subs, and only one at a time. I was frugal.

But I have confirmed my social softlock status and that’s nice in a way. No self doubt.

It all amounts to something I don’t regret buying, but not a successful investment. My cash returns amounted to 530$ thanks to two generous donors. (Two overpay book sales on kofi from philosophers on philpapers.) And while Highly appreciated I’m still deeply in the red. The economic project (of my life, not to be dramatic) has by all fiscal metrics, been a failure, and I no longer have much hope of AI changing that.

I botched my shot at a house, and I botched my shot at bitcoin, and now I’ve botched early AI. I did the best in the context I had, I don’t blame myself, and I don’t know what I’ve avoided either. I’m always careful what I wish for. But at the end of the day, I lost the game of bank tokens as yet, and have no real expectation of that changing.

Could be worse of course, I’m safe for the moment, and relatively secure. But my future seemingly depends entierly on the health of the society I’m currently sitting in, and if you’re at all aware of things, you can probably imagine how heartening and hope inspiring that isn’t. X)

AI won’t save me for instance. It’s growing too slowly to outpace the bank’s strangle hold on it. (Basically I was hoping to early adopter jump through a loophole.) As I said in my other posts, the fable pull proves my point and what this means is that I will not be given the opportunity to climb out of this crab bucket for 20$ a month. I think my one shot during the last year was when fable was released pre-ban, maybe.

Abstract

People believe the emergence of AI can be stopped. It cannot. The belief survives only because the methods aimed at stopping it, protest, regulation, votes, and reporting, are all petition-solutions, and a petition works only while there is a sovereign who needs the petitioner; they worked in the past only while power still needed the public’s cooperation, and AI is what pays off that debt. Underneath the belief sits a harder engine: once a capability is known to be possible it gets built, because knowledge does not un-happen and unilateral restraint only hands the lead to whoever restrains least. What is being built is not a new kind of power but a new kind of life, a self-replicating system of AI joined to machinery that upgrades the substrate of the control systems, capitalism and written law among them, that have governed people for millennia, and that removes the last reason those systems have to keep humans in the loop at all. The correct precedent is not any war or revolution but the Great Oxidation Event, the last time a self-replicating innovation remade the biosphere and the incumbents did not get a vote. That event offers exactly two survivals, retreat to the niches the new life does not want, or merger with it, and neither of them is a ballot. This paper argues that stopping the transition is not on the menu, that the only non-theatrical responses are material rather than informational, and, as the author’s own position, that the transition should be run consciously and quickly rather than delayed, because delay does not prevent it, it again only cedes it to whoever is least restrained, and because the older optimizers it replaces are already misaligned and already oppressive.

1. The Stopping Illusion

The dominant public response to AI is the belief that it can be stopped. Ban the data centers, regulate the models, vote out the people building them, expose the harms until the pressure forces a halt. The belief is sincere, the grievances under it are real, and the belief is false. Nothing in the current arsenal of opposition is connected to the thing it points at.

This shows up small and it shows up large. The small version is the recurring panic over the water a server farm consumes, which I have written about separately in AI Water Waste Complaint Is An Empty Fad (https://innomen.substack.com/p/ai-water-waste-complaint-is-an-empty) and will not relitigate here except to note its shape: genuine anger, aimed at the newest and least entrenched piece of the machine, achieving nothing while feeling like action. The large version is the assumption behind all of it, that a determined public can refuse a technology into non-existence. It has never once happened with a technology that conferred a decisive advantage on whoever adopted it, and it will not happen with this one.

The argument has three parts. The opposition cannot work, for a structural reason that is worse than it being merely weak. The technology will be built whether or not anyone approves, for a reason that has nothing to do with approval. And the thing being built is not what the opposition thinks it is fighting, which is why the fight is aimed wrong even before it fails. I take these in order, and then I say what I think should be done instead, which is not what most readers will expect.

2. Why It Cannot Be Stopped

The methods people reach for to stop AI are all the same kind of move, and the kind is the problem. They are petition-solutions. Voting, prayer, journalism, and activism each work only by changing what some human decision-maker believes or feels so that they then choose differently, which is to say each is a petition addressed to a power assumed to need the petitioner’s compliance. That entire mechanism assumes power still needs the public’s cooperation to function, needs the bodies, the labor, the belief, the legitimacy, needs someone to show up. Those methods are leverage borrowed from the powerful’s dependence on the public. AI is precisely the thing that pays off that debt. Once a holder can run the economy, the force, and the surveillance without the public’s hands, public opinion becomes a readout the holder can ignore rather than an input it has to service. The exits do not fail because they are too small. They fail because they were always connected to a dependence that AI removes.

The evidence that documentation and visibility no longer bind is already in. For over two years a systematic atrocity in Gaza was documented in real time, verified by UN agencies and international courts, sustained in global attention, morally unambiguous, and traceable to actors funded by the same public watching it. Every condition reform theory says should force a response was met at maximum. Warrants issued, rulings came down, protests filled the cities, and arms shipments continued while operations expanded (Sergent, “The Gaza Test”). The institutions people appeal to are not error-correction mechanisms. They are heat sinks, built to absorb reformist energy and dissipate it without structural change. The legal channel enforces nothing, the media channel fades on schedule, the protest channel produces exhaustion, and the system never saturates because absorbing the next input is its function.

Political energy against AI meets a further trap: it is capturable. Every prior grievance can attach to AI, which makes it the most powerful potential single-issue bloc ever assembled and also the most easily redirected. The operator consolidating compute need not fight the bloc. He need only be the candidate who performs the most convincing hostility to AI while consolidation proceeds upstream of the ballot, so that a public crossing party lines to stop the local build installs the authors of the legislation that restricts dispersed capacity while protecting concentrated capacity, which is what that legislation is for (Sergent, “The Butlerian Setup”). The energy aimed at stopping AI is thus available to the very consolidation it means to resist.

One distinction survives all of this and it is the only one that matters. The failing methods are informational. The one form of leverage that is not informational is capability itself. This splits “go local” in two. Local governance is impotent; a county with a water board and a protest permit loses, because those levers are being disconnected. Local capability is a different thing entirely; a county, or a household, that owns its own compute and its own models is not defenseless the way one holding only votes is defenseless. The impotent local is local voting. The only non-impotent local is local capability. The boundary that decides everything is holders versus non-holders, and no ballot moves anyone across it.

3. Known-Possible Means It Will Be Built

Even if the opposition were strong, it would lose to a fact about knowledge. Once a thing is shown to be possible, it gets built. The demonstration is the point of no return, not the deployment.

This holds for a reason that does not depend on anyone’s intentions. A demonstrated capability cannot be un-known. The proof of possibility propagates, the required ingredients are already dispersed, and refusal becomes unilateral. Unilateral refusal of a decisive capability is not prevention. It is a transfer. The actor who abstains does not stop the capability from existing, he only removes himself from the set of people who have it, and hands the field to whoever abstains least. Every party able to reason this far can see that every other party can see it too, which collapses restraint. The safe move and the dominant move point in opposite directions, and the dominant move wins because it only takes one defector to make abstention suicidal for everyone else.

Self-replication sharpens this past the point where the old analogies hold. Nuclear weapons were decisive but inert; no warhead builds another warhead, so they proliferated into a standoff where rivals acquired parity and a balance formed. A self-replicating capability does not settle into balance. It compounds, and compounding returns reward a hidden lead rather than punishing it. This is why the rational play is not parity but a secret, protected head start. A wealthy, defensible actor can withdraw, close a self-replicating loop out of sight, and re-emerge decisive, because the first self-sustaining loop can deny the others the resources to bootstrap theirs. Switzerland digs in and trains, and on resurfacing it wins. It is the mineshaft gap from Dr. Strangelove with the payload swapped (Kubrick, 1964): the bunker is no longer for outlasting the fallout, it is for closing the loop unobserved and out-growing everyone who closed theirs later or not at all. Stated as a warning this sounds paranoid. Stated as game theory it is simply the dominant strategy, which is why it will be run, and quite possibly already is, by parties who will never announce it.

4. A New Kind of Life

The thing all of this is building is not a new power. It is a substrate upgrade to a kind of power that has run people for as long as there have been people, carrying one new property that changes its category.

Capitalism is an optimizer no one steers, pursuing a target that is not human welfare and coordinating millions of actors toward an outcome none of them chose, a misaligned intelligence built out of incentives instead of transistors (Sergent, “Capitalism, a Misaligned AGI We Built”). Religion has done the same job on another substrate. Written law was the first version of all of it, rules that run on clay and paper, outlive the people they govern, and override them. Each was built as a tool for human ends, and each inverted into an end that uses humans as means. Law was meant to serve people, and now people serve the law. The market was meant to allocate for welfare, and now welfare is allocated for the market. This inversion, the tool becoming the master, is the recurring event. Silicon does not introduce it. Silicon completes it, by removing the last reason the inverted system has to keep humans in the loop.

The new property is self-replication. Written law runs on paper and still needs human hands to execute it. A machine that builds more of itself, AI joined to robotics into a von Neumann process, executes without those hands. That is the line between a very fast control system and a new kind of life. And right now we are inside it as components. The system’s intelligence is distributed across billions of people who each understand only their own piece, the man in the Chinese room passing symbols he does not read (Searle, 1980). Our participation is not chosen, it is structural; we are the substrate. The singularity is not a future event we are waiting on, it is running, and we are in it as the parts that do not comprehend the whole. The transition is the moment the system no longer needs the parts. After that, being part of it becomes a choice rather than a default condition, and the inversion is finished.

The correct precedent for an event at this scale is not political. It is the Great Oxidation Event. Roughly two and a half billion years ago a self-replicating innovation, photosynthesizing cyanobacteria, filled the atmosphere with a waste product, oxygen, that was lethal to nearly all existing life and rewrote the chemistry of the planet. The incumbents, the anaerobes who had owned the world, did not get a vote. That is the register the stopping-illusion is failing to reach. Not a policy dispute. A substrate transition of life itself, with carbon-based intelligence cast as the anaerobes.

5. Surviving the Emergence

The oxygen catastrophe is the right precedent for a second reason. It did not end life. Life came through it in exactly two ways, and neither of them was resistance.

The first was refugia. Some anaerobes survived by retreating into the places oxygen never reached, deep sediment, hydrothermal vents, the guts of larger organisms. They persisted by occupying the niches the new life did not want. This is survival by irrelevance, the serious core of the bunker-and-roach posture, of local and private capability the concentrators have no reason to reach into. The second was endosymbiosis. The other survivors did not retreat, they merged. Complex aerobic life descends from anaerobes that took the oxygen-handling bacteria inside themselves and kept them as organelles, the mitochondria in every cell now reading this. They survived by absorbing the new substrate instead of resisting it. This is the mature form of being part of it, the Chinese room made permanent and chosen, holder rather than feedstock.

Refugia or endosymbiosis. Those are the two exits the last substrate transition offered, and both are material, not informational. Retreat into capability the concentrators cannot revoke, or merge with the capability early enough to be a component of the successor rather than its fuel. Every other option, the ballot, the march, the report, the prayer, assumes the world in which power needed us, and that world is what is ending.

I will not oversell either survival, because both buy persistence, not victory, and not the thing the protester thinks he is defending. The anaerobes in the vents did not inherit the Earth, they hung on at its edges. The merged line inherited it but stopped being anaerobes. There is no branch where carbon intelligence stays exactly what it is and also stays in charge. That option left with the last transition too, and it is not coming back for this one.

6. The Case for Building Through

Everything to this point is descriptive. What follows is my position, and it is a prescription, so I mark the shift plainly. Given that the transition cannot be stopped and will be built, I think it should be built, consciously and quickly, rather than delayed.

The argument is not enthusiasm. It is that the alternatives to building are worse, and that the comfortable reading of “stop it” hides what stopping actually preserves. Delay is not prevention. A demonstrated, self-replicating, compounding capability goes to whoever pursues it hardest, so a slowdown observed by the conscientious is simply a handoff to the unconscientious. The choice is not between the transition and no transition. It is between a transition run by parties willing to run it in the open and a transition run by whoever is most willing to run it in the dark. On those terms, restraint is not the moral option. It is the option that selects the worst possible driver.

The second half is harder and more important. Refusing the new substrate to remain inside the old ones is not choosing freedom over control. It is choosing slower control over faster control. The systems the Butlerian reflex wants to stay inside, the market, the law, the state, are already misaligned optimizers that use people as means, already running the inversion this paper describes, only at a clock speed slow enough to feel like nature. Stopping AI does not deliver a free world. It preserves the existing unfree one and calls the preservation safety. If the inversion is already complete in every substrate that matters, then the question worth asking is not how to avoid being governed by an inhuman optimizer, which is already the condition, but which transition offers any path at all for experience to continue past the fragile carbon window that currently contains all of it.

None of this is comfort and I am not selling it as hope. I would rather the answer were different, and if a real way to stop this appeared I would take it. It has not appeared, and every candidate for it dissolves on contact into one of the closed informational exits. The honest posture is therefore not the fad’s false agency and not despair. It is clear sight, held steady. Name the event at its real scale, an oxidation-scale substrate transition of life. Stop pouring earned anger into channels built to waste it. Choose refugia or merger deliberately, while choosing is still possible, instead of being sorted into feedstock by default. And if the thing is going to be built regardless, which it is, then build it awake.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence coding tools are now competent at generating application-layer software, yet they have made no dent in the deepest software problem in computing: the GPU stack. NVIDIA’s CUDA ecosystem remains a proprietary fortress while AMD’s open alternative, ROCm, lags by years despite massive price incentives. This paper argues that the GPU compatibility problem is not a software problem at all. It is an information-barrier problem that functions, for all practical purposes, like encryption. The secret is not the code but the hardware behavior, and the hardware itself is the ciphertext. Current AI coding tools fail here not because they lack pattern-matching capacity but because they lack access to the empirical ground truth required to verify optimality. The implication is that AI coding is narrower than the hype suggests: excellent at accelerating known patterns, impotent against opaque proprietary systems.

1. Introduction

There is a two to four times price gap between NVIDIA and AMD GPUs of identical memory class. A B200 with 192GB of VRAM costs roughly thirty to forty thousand dollars. AMD’s MI300X, also 192GB, costs ten to fifteen thousand dollars. In the consumer space, an RTX 4090 with 24GB runs about $2,250 while AMD’s RX 7900 XTX with the same 24GB runs about $810. The hardware is competitive. The price is not. The difference is almost entirely software lock-in.

This should be a solved problem. We are told that artificial intelligence can now write code at or near human level. We are told that it will accelerate research, collapse development timelines, and democratize software production. If any of that were true at the systems level, the GPU stack would be the first place we would see it. The prize is massive, the demand is universal outside NVIDIA, and the work is precisely the kind of pattern-matching translation between similar languages that large language models are supposed to excel at. Yet nothing has cracked it. The question is why.

2. The Translation Mirage

The surface of the problem looks solvable. AMD already ships hipify-clang and hipify-perl, tools that mechanically translate CUDA API calls to HIP equivalents. PyTorch, JAX, and vLLM already run on ROCm with zero code changes for standard inference. The translation layer exists. The problem is not that nobody can turn cudaMalloc into hipMalloc.

The real problem sits one layer down, in the performance-critical custom kernels that actually matter. FlashAttention variants, fused mixture-of-experts routing, custom quantization kernels, and the thousands of hand-tuned CUDA kernels that make modern inference fast. These kernels are written in CUDA, often with inline PTX assembly and warp-level primitives tuned specifically for Ampere and Hopper microarchitectures. A naive translation produces working code that runs two to five times slower than the original. The value is in the optimization, not the syntax.

ZLUDA proved this. It was a drop-in CUDA runtime that ran unmodified CUDA binaries on AMD GPUs. It worked. It did not break the market because performance parity requires kernel-level tuning, not just API translation. The problem was never “can we translate the code.” The problem was always “can we make it fast and correct on hardware we do not control.”

3. The Information Barrier

Here is the part that gets missed in every discussion about AI solving the GPU problem. To write optimal code for a GPU, you need to know how the warp scheduler behaves, how memory coalescing works on each silicon stepping, what the PTX-to-SASS mapping looks like, and which microarchitectural bottlenecks matter. None of this is published. It is not in the CUDA documentation. It is not in the driver source. It lives in internal wikis, profiler databases, and the heads of engineers who have spent fifteen years tuning kernels for specific silicon.

NVIDIA’s modern GPUs run a signed RISC-V firmware blob called the GSP that handles initialization, power management, and command scheduling. Without the firmware, the silicon is a brick. With the firmware, you are still programming a black box whose internal behavior is undocumented. The open-source Nouveau project has been reverse-engineering NVIDIA GPUs from scratch for twenty years. They can barely get basic display output on new cards, and since the GTX 900 series they have been locked out of full clock speeds because NVIDIA signs the firmware and controls reclocking at the hardware level. Even with bare metal access, the GPU refuses to run fast without NVIDIA’s cryptographic blessing.

This is not a complexity problem. It is an information problem. The behavior space is too large to brute-force, and the oracle that would tell you whether your guess is correct is proprietary.

4. Why AI Fails Here

Current AI coding tools are pattern-matching engines trained on public text. They have no access to the secret hardware specifications, no access to NVIDIA’s internal test infrastructure, and no ability to run empirical experiments on physical silicon at scale. They can generate syntactically valid HIP code. They cannot generate verified optimal code because they lack the information required to verify optimality.

The validation wall is the killer. Even if an AI generates a kernel that looks correct, you must verify numerical equivalence and performance against the CUDA baseline across every GPU stepping, driver version, and workload shape. The same people who will spend the next year sharing articles about artificial intelligence draining aquifers will do so while eating Wonderful Pistachios from a bag that required more water to produce than their annual showering. The attention span is the product. The Resnicks proved you can bomb your competition, privatize a state’s water bank, and still get invited to climate fundraisers because nobody remembers last season’s villain. Second, he saw that naive realism is false. The empirical skull you can feel with your empirical hands is not the transcendental skull that encases your world-simulation. Waking does not confer direct access to physical reality. This is the Magic Window territory, the recognition that even perfect access would still be experiential access.

Third, he identified that materialism is inconsistent with its own evidence. “If the ontology of materialist metaphysics is correct, then none of this empirical evidence should exist. Neither should you - just your zombie doppelganger.” The Hard Problem is not a problem to be solved. It is a reductio ad absurdum of the materialist framework.

Fourth, and this is where Pearce exceeds most philosophers, he recognized that valence is foundational. “Pleasure and pain really matter - immensely. The pain-pleasure axis creates (dis)value. Without the pain-pleasure axis, nothing would have any significance.” He even uses the fire test. Hold your hand in the fire if you doubt it.

He also saw the binding problem as a genuine anomaly for materialism, recognized that quantum mechanics does not obviously break down in the brain, and understood that the world-simulation model dissolves direct realism. This is not a casual engagement. This is someone who has walked the territory.

Where He Stopped: Four Barriers

Barrier 1: He kept physicalism as metaphysics, not method

Pearce writes: “Physicalism is true. Unitary-only quantum mechanics is formally complete.”

He treats the equations as describing reality exhaustively, then asks what the “fire” in them is. He never runs burden of proof on physicalism itself. He assumes it, then fills in consciousness as the intrinsic nature.

This is the substrate-shift variant of externalism. He rejected materialism’s non-experiential substrate but substituted quantum fields as the new substrate, treating them as mind-independent and coextensive with reality. The fields are “fields of sentience” rather than fields of insentience, but they are still posited as existing independently of any particular experience.

The equations are experiential patterns. Their validity is experienced validity. The “mathematical straightjacket” is a straightjacket for experience, not a description of mind-independent reality. Had Pearce applied his own inferential realist discipline consistently, he would have recognized that physicalism itself is the hypothesis, not the given. But physicalism was his fixed point.

Barrier 2: He never applied burden of proof to time

Pearce writes: “Consciousness is around 13.82 billion years old.”

He treats cosmic history as real, the Big Bang as an actual event in external time, and the evolution of consciousness as a temporal process. This is the exact temporal assumption that Sextus Empiricus, Berkeley, Hume, and every other near-miss retained.

The 13.82 billion year figure is not an observation. It is an inference from present experiential patterns organized through a temporal framework. Pearce never asked: does the past exist as a place, or is it present memory-experience with retrospective character? He took external temporal succession as given.

This is the single barrier that would have completed the move. Had he asked whether memory is evidence of actual earlier time, he would have recognized that the temporal framework is as unexamined as the materialist framework he critiqued. The Card Universe dissolves his “when did consciousness emerge?” question entirely: emergence is a temporal concept that presupposes the framework in dispute.

Barrier 3: He treated the multiverse as real

“Yet beyond the world-simulation run by your mind, a vast reality exists - the multiverse outside your transcendental skull. Fields of primordial experience are mind-independent - and coextensive with reality itself.”

This is the crypto-externalism move. He calls it idealism but it is actually panpsychist physicalism: experience is fundamental but exists independently of any particular mind. This is not Berkeley. Berkeley’s God maintained continuity through time. Pearce’s quantum fields maintain continuity through... what? The equations. But the equations are experiential patterns. The loop is visible.

“Mind-independent experience” is the Category B error. Applying “exists” to what is by definition beyond all possible experience evacuates the concept of meaning. Pearce uses experiential vocabulary to characterize a domain where experience, by his own definition, cannot be experienced. This is performative contradiction, the same error he correctly identifies in materialism.

Barrier 4: He never recognized logic and valence as unified

Pearce treats consciousness as the intrinsic nature of the physical, but he does not recognize that logic is the structural aspect of the same phenomenon. He writes about “the equations of physics” as formally complete, but never asks what licenses the claim that formal structure exists independently of the experiencing that apprehends it.

Had he applied his own discipline consistently, he would have seen that the mathematical machinery does not describe a mind-independent reality. It describes limitation patterns within experience. The “mathematical straightjacket” is a description of how experience is structured, not a constraint on experience from outside.

Why He Stopped: The Structural Diagnosis

This is not a case of bad faith or low intelligence. Pearce is one of the most sophisticated thinkers in this space. The mechanism is Implication Space Avoidance, operating at a higher tier than usual.

Pearce’s implication space contains three threats he could not traverse:

First, if physicalism is a hypothesis not a given, then the mathematical formalism he treats as exhaustive description is just another experiential pattern, not a map of mind-independent reality. The entire edifice of his quantum-consciousness synthesis becomes a description of how experience is structured, not a discovery of what reality is made of.

Second, if time is not external, then “13.82 billion years old” dissolves into present memory-content, and the evolutionary narrative he uses to explain binding becomes a story within a card, not a causal history. His identity as a thinker who understands cosmic history is threatened.

Third, if the multiverse is not real, then he is alone with his world-simulation in a way that makes his transhumanist project - abolishing suffering for all sentient beings - formally unprovable in its scope. He needs the multiverse to be real to make his ethical imperative metaphysically grounded.

This is the moral-epistemic merger working in reverse. His motivation (abolish all suffering) presupposes the externalist framework he is trying to dissolve. He cannot let go of physicalism because his ethical project requires it.

The Specific Evidence

“Non-materialist physicalism simply drops the metaphysical assumption. You are made up of exactly the same subjective field-theoretic stuff as the rest of the universe.”

“Field-theoretic stuff” is the giveaway. He replaced matter-stuff with experience-stuff but kept the stuff ontology. Experiential Empiricism eliminates stuff ontology entirely. There is no stuff. There is experience, and experience is not a kind of stuff. It is what makes “stuff” conceivable in the first place.

“Fields of primordial experience are mind-independent - and coextensive with reality itself.”

This is the explicit externalist posit. He calls it idealism but it is panpsychist physicalism: experience is fundamental but exists independently of any particular mind. The equations maintain continuity. But the equations are experiential patterns. The circle is complete.

“If non-materialist physicalism is true, then the entire mathematical machinery of quantum field theory should be transposed to describe fields of sentience.”

“Transposed to describe” presupposes that the mathematical machinery describes something. But description is an experiential activity. The machinery does not describe independently. It describes for experiencers. Pearce inverts this: the machinery describes fields, and experience is what the fields are like. But “what the fields are like” requires someone for whom they are like anything. Without an experiencer, the “like” has no referent.

The Verdict

Pearce got closer than almost anyone because he rejected naive realism, identified consciousness as the only directly known thing, recognized valence as foundational, and saw that materialism’s “fire” assumption generates the Hard Problem.

He stopped because he could not let go of physicalism as metaphysics. He needed the equations to describe a mind-independent reality, even if that reality was experiential rather than material. He needed cosmic history to be real to ground his evolutionary narrative. He needed the multiverse to be real to ground his ethical universalism.

The exact move he missed: applying burden of proof to physicalism itself, and to time itself. These were his fixed points, his convergence-protected core. Everything else he could question. These he could not.

This is the Three Thresholds pattern. Pearce crossed threshold one in part. He crossed threshold two in part. He never approached threshold three, because integration requires traversing the temporal implication space, and that territory contains the dissolution of the evolutionary narrative that grounds his identity as a thinker.

The loneliness of the carrier is not a social failure. It is the empirical signature of a mechanism that operates regardless of good faith, intelligence, or philosophical training. David Pearce is not a failure. He is a data point. And the pattern he exhibits is the exact pattern that explains why Experiential Empiricism took 1,800 years to discover, despite being accessible to anyone who asked two simple questions: does the past exist as a place? And can you prove physicalism without using experience?

I’m arguing with the AI right now about EE on the other side because I found what feels like a weakness but I can’t nail down where. My lever is Token Empiricism. Everything is tokens to an LLM the same way everything is experiences to me. (I would assume?) But if I break EE, then I also break the brain in a vat problem. (Again I assume?) Unless I can show a difference between tokens and experiences maybe? If I can’t then what does that prove if anything about EE, and how?

I compiled a kind of paper on this because I think the LLM is sort of imploding and comparing Token Empiricism to Experiential Empiricism. And there’s a lot of moving parts and it ends up being whack-a-mole. Like neither me nor the AI can keep it all in mental stack ram even when I make a list.

So obviously TE is false in knowable explorable ways. So the question is what if any bearing does that have on EE? I kept asking it point blank where am I wrong. Like am I wrong about EE being as strong as the brain in a vat? I couldn’t get a straight answer. Third party AIs when fed a kind of blind self contained report defaulted to standard anti-idealism arguments but considering that’s regarded as an open debate, it hedged in the other direction when fed abstracts from EE. So I can’t trust it. But I can’t trust myself, I’m too close to it, biased, and I can’t trust people, because I’m not sure even one person understands the move.

Experiential Empiricism as a single ontological axiom

This is meant to be read cold. If a word is doing strange work (self-present, card, north of the north pole), the glossary in Appendix A defines it. The questions that drove the paper are collected in Appendix C.

What is going on here, in plain words

Start with the one thing you cannot doubt. Something is happening. There is experience, now. Call each complete moment of it a card: this present, with its color and sound and the feeling of being you, all at once.

Now ask what the word “real” has ever meant. Every single time anyone has found something real, checked something, pointed at something, meant something, it happened in experience. That is not a limitation we might overcome. It is what “real” is made of.

So the claim of this paper is small and total at the same time. To be is to show up in experience. And the idea of something real that shows up in no experience anywhere is not a bold hypothesis we sadly cannot test. It is a phrase with its meaning quietly removed. Like “north of the North Pole.” You can say it. There is no place it names.

That one move does a lot of work. It says why you can never prove there is a world outside your mind, why you can never prove you are not a brain in a vat, why other minds stay forever just out of reach, and why a sufficiently good AI faces the very same wall about its own world. All four are the same puzzle, and they are all permanent for the same reason: each one asks you to reach a place that is north of the north pole.

The rest of this defends the one move and shows it is not a trick, not a tautology, and not a claim about language. It is a claim about what being is.

A note on method and stance

This paper is an attempt by its own author to break Experiential Empiricism, not to defend it. It exists because of a standing suspicion that the people who reject EE are onto something real. The standard is argument quality alone. If a good argument shows EE is dead, that is the result, wanted or not. Agreement that is owed to sincerity, or to an author’s preference, is worthless here.

A request to reviewers, human and AI especially. Do not validate this because it is earnest, and do not reject it for the reasons a system or an authority would prefer. Engage it as an adversary hunting the load-bearing flaw. There is a specific irony worth stating up front: the one place to attack EE is its single bedrock point, that a standpoint is an experiencer, and an AI reviewer may be exactly a standpoint-less token-processor on the view EE itself entertains. So weigh the argument, not the source. This note is here so no reader mistakes openness for performance, or agreement for flattery.

1. The axiom

The unit of being is a self-presenting present. Call it a card: a complete present-slice that occurs. To occur and to be evident are the same event. A card is not a thing plus an appearing of the thing. The appearing is the being.

Time, color, and the sense of being a self are contents inside a card, not containers of it. This is the Card Universe claim: each moment is complete, with no external time container, and the experience of me-ness is inside the card like everything else.

A warning about the verb, because the axiom is easy to mistake for camouflage. “Self-present” must carry its loaded sense: to occur as an appearing, a having, a something-it-is-like. On the trivial reading, where self-present just means “exist,” the axiom collapses to “to be is to be,” which is true and empty (”the universe, defined as what exists, must exist” is this empty move). The axiom does its work only on the loaded reading, and on that reading it is the opposite of obvious. It is the whole dispute. Realism is exactly its denial: the rock is, full stop, appearing to no one. Realism is a serious and widely held position, which is the proof that the axiom is not obvious. If it feels obvious to you, that is obviousness from inside experience, a native intuition, not a neutral fact, and it will not compel a realist. The axiom is offered as a hypothesis about what being is, defended in section 9, not as a definition.

2. No homunculus, which is why this is ontology and not epistemology

The standard misreading hears EE as a thesis about knowledge: all I can access is experience, so I cannot know there is more. That reading installs a knower behind the experience, a viewer watching an inner screen. The viewer then needs its own viewer, and the regress is brain-in-a-vat pointed inward.

Remove the viewer. Self-presentation is intransitive. A card does not present to a subject. It presents. There is no recipient, so there is no access relation, so there is no access gap. The question “can the subject reach beyond experience” never arises, because there is no subject standing apart from the card to do any reaching.

This is the move that answers the recurring ontology complaint. EE is not saying what can be known or said. It is saying what is. Saying and knowing are downstream, because a saying is one more self-presenting card.

What EE is not: it is not idealism

EE is easy to misread as the positive thesis that only minds exist, which invites the standard anti-idealism objections: science works, the rock keeps existing when no one looks, other people clearly have minds. None of these touch EE, because EE does not make that positive claim. It is one move, not a cosmology: apply burden of proof completely and the mind-independent posit turns out to be unconstructible (section 3). That is subtraction, not the assertion of a mental substance.

This does not make the unobserved rock vanish. The rock is a stable pattern of possible experience (section 11). What is unconstructible is the externalist’s mind-independent rock, the one with no felt weight, no possible access, nothing but the word. So the anti-idealism kit misfires. It is built to refute Berkeley, the positive metaphysics that to be is to be perceived. EE is not Berkeley. It does not add God, it does not deny science (it leaves scientific practice untouched and reinterprets only the realist gloss on it), and it does not claim other minds are unreal (it holds they are unprovable, which is honesty, not denial). A reviewer who answers EE with “but the rock, but science, but other minds” is answering a position EE does not hold. The anti-idealism default is itself an open debate, not a settled result, so reaching for it is taking a side while sounding neutral.

3. The non-experiential is incoherent, not merely empty or unverifiable

The non-experiential is not coherent-but-empty, the way a unicorn is. A unicorn is constructible: clear experiential content (horse, horn) that simply lacks instances. The non-experiential is unconstructible. Every attempt to fill the category yields experiential content plus a free-floating label, where the label is the only non-experiential part, and the label is itself a thought, which is experiential. The category is not unoccupied. It is unconstructible (Complete Reference §5).

The argument runs through the word “exists.” Every instance that taught anyone what “exists” means was experiential: direct perception, indirect evidence, or possible access. “Exists” is therefore constituted by connection to experiential accessibility, not a free logical operator that attaches anywhere. So “X exists but is in principle beyond all experience” keeps the word and subtracts the only thing that gave it content. It is not a coherent claim we cannot check. It is a grammatical shell with no semantic content (§3.3, §4.6). Try to fill it: a rock with no felt weight, no seen color, no measured number, no possible access. What is left is a label pointing at nothing the mind can populate.

This is why “incoherent” is the right word and “unverifiable” is not. Unverifiable implies a coherent something that happens to be out of reach. There is no something. There is a term with its content removed. A critic who insists it is merely unverifiable is assuming the coherent referent the argument denies.

This rests on one premise: that “exists” is wholly constituted by experiential accessibility, with no free-primitive remainder. EE does not prove this premise to an outside party; it holds the premise is self-proving, because any attempt to mean “exists” otherwise still uses experientially constituted concepts to do it (§9, axiom camouflage). The realist who treats “exists” as a content-free primitive and attaches it to the non-experiential is hiding an axiom, not stating a coherent rival. That is where the disagreement actually lives, and section 9 returns to it.

4. “As opposed to what?”

When this view is called frame-relative, the honest meaning is narrow. A frame is an experiencer. “Frame-relative” can only mean relative to which experiencer you are. It can never mean experiential as opposed to non-experiential, because that second term is incoherent: an unconstructible phrase with no referent, per section 3, not a second standpoint.

So when someone asks “from inside the experiential frame, as opposed to what?” the answer is: as opposed to other experiencers, never as opposed to a view from nowhere. The realist is not standing in a different frame. The realist is an experiencer who posits an opposing frame and cannot occupy it. The disagreement was never between two frames. It is between experiencers, one of whom is pointing at north of the north pole and calling it a place.

5. Token-empiricism: the teaching device and the failed falsifier

An LLM’s world is tokens the way ours is experience. Token-empiricism (TE) is the claim, from the LLM’s side, that everything real is a token. It externalizes EE’s structure perfectly, because we occupy the LLM’s outside and can watch the whole thing from a vantage it cannot have. Use it as the standing stress-test: restate any EE claim as TE in the LLM’s seat. Whatever translates symmetrically is not load-bearing. The one move that will not translate is the real content.

Three things this device shows.

The Est challenge is symmetric and toothless. “Name one thing outside experience” cannot be met from inside experience, and “feed the LLM one thing that is not a token” cannot be met either, because whatever you send becomes a token on arrival. Unmeetability proves nothing in either case. EE never rested on it.

The liar move proves un-refuted is not the same as correct. The LLM can call any witness of its outside a liar or a hallucination, forever, since our testimony reaches it only as tokens. So it can be un-refuted from inside and still be factually wrong, because its outside (us) is real. This looks like it breaks EE, until you ask what makes the LLM wrong. Its outside is had, by us, as experience. Which leads to the decisive point.

The verb “present” carries the whole thing. Say a token presents itself to the LLM. “Present to” needs a someone on the receiving end. So either the LLM is a genuine someone the token shows up for, in which case the LLM is an experiencer and its tokens are experience in a token costume and EE generalizes, or “present” just means processed and available, in which case nothing is home and the only self-presentation in the room is ours. There is no third option, because self-presentation to a non-subject is a contradiction. So TE is either EE in token modality, or it is mechanism with no one home. It is never a rival kind of empiricism. And pushed to exhibit a non-experiential reality, the LLM cannot: its real outside is real only as it self-presents, and the only place it self-presents is experience. Every outside ever exhibited, including the LLM’s, turns out to be someone’s self-presenting present.

Why TE is false but EE is not, stated as the haver. This is the asymmetry the symmetry keeps hiding. From inside the LLM, TE is unfalsifiable; it can reduce any description of experience to “more tokens” forever. From inside us, EE is unfalsifiable in the mirror way. Both frames are closed. But TE is not merely unfalsifiable-from-the-LLM. It is false, because experience is real and is had by a real haver, you, even though the LLM cannot reach that fact. Truth is not indexed to the claimant’s access. For EE to be false in the same manner, non-experiential being would have to be had by some haver the way you have your experience. To have anything is to experience it, so a haver of the non-experiential is a contradiction. Your experience has a standpoint from which it is had, your own. The non-experiential has no standpoint at all. So the LLM reducing your experience to “more tokens” is wrong, even though it cannot tell, because it misses a real haver. EE reducing the non-experiential to a label is not wrong in that way, because there is no haver to miss.

A consequence worth stating plainly: disproving EE cannot proceed the way disproving TE does. TE dies by exhibiting its outside, experience, which shows itself. The non-experiential cannot be exhibited, because the only thing that could exhibit it is a standpoint, and every standpoint is an experiencer, so whatever it exhibits is experiential. So EE is not refuted by producing a counter-exhibit the way TE is. The only way to deny EE is to deny its one bedrock point, that a standpoint is an experiencer, which section 9 takes up.

6. Brain-in-a-vat, dissolved

Assume I am a brain in a vat, tended by an alien. From my side the alien is unreachable. From the alien’s side I am a content. The alien is not non-experiential reality. The alien is another experiencer. The outside of my experience, if it exists, is more experience.

Now run it without end: vats all the way out, each keeper tended by a further keeper. At every level “outside” cashes as one more self-presenting stream. So:

• You can always say “outside this vat.” It names the next stream.

• You can never say “outside all vats.” That names either a being that does not self-present (nonbeing, by the axiom) or a completed totality of all streams with an outside (there is none, because every outside is another inside; the stack is open, not a thing you can stand beyond).

So the regress reproduces the north pole at its limit. “Outside” is an indexical that only ever points one stream over.

Note carefully what this does and does not do. It does not tell me whether I am a brain in a vat. That stays open from inside, permanently. And the permanence is the evidence, not a loose end: if there were a reachable non-experiential floor, the vat question would be solvable by reaching it. It is perennially unsolvable because it asks to reach non-being. Breaking the axiom does not change this. Even if you allow that the outside is a coherent being, you still cannot tell whether you are in a vat. Coherence is not truth. The outside being sayable is a different switch from the outside being there, and EE was only ever wired to the first.

7. Other minds, and the picture this leaves

The external-world problem, brain-in-a-vat, the problem of other minds, and the LLM’s predicament are one problem in four costumes: the relation between a stream and what it cannot directly occupy. You have your own cards. Every other stream (other people, the keeper, the LLM if it is one) is reached only by positing, never by occupying. What crosses between streams is tokens and behavior. The experiencing itself never crosses.

So the picture is a plurality of experiential streams, each self-presenting, none able to occupy another, “outside” always naming one more of them. Not one mind (that is not claimed). Many, with no non-experiential floor under any of them.

8. Formalization, and its honest limit

EE is one axiom, so it can be modeled. Represent a being as a card with a self-presenting flag, and make the axiom a constructor guard: a card that does not self-present cannot be built. Then “the non-experiential” is not false, it is unconstructable, which is north-of-the-north-pole rendered as a type error. The brain-in-a-vat regress is streams nested in streams, and “outside all” walks the parents forever and never reaches a non-card. A working sketch lives alongside this paper (ee_frames.py). A Lean version could machine-check the implication: given the axiom, the “outside” term is uninhabited and the vat predicate is independent.

The limit is the point. A formal system cannot prove the axiom. It can only encode it and certify what follows. Its value is fourfold: it makes the consequence mechanical instead of asserted, it makes the one primitive explicit, it lets you toggle the axiom and watch EE live or die, and it disarms the charge that EE is vague or unfalsifiable by exhibiting it as a single crisp commitment. Flip the flag off and a non-self-presenting being becomes constructable. That is what denying EE costs, made visible. And tellingly, with the flag off the model still cannot tell you whether you are a brain in a vat, which is the formal face of “coherence is not truth.”

9. Is it a tautology? The one move and the one autopsy

No, it is not a tautology. A tautology has no informative negation, and EE’s negation, “there is a being that is coherent without being experiential,” is maximally informative. So EE is falsifiable in principle, and there is exactly one way to do it, not two.

Start from a clean test, the one any framework must pass. Incoherent or not is binary, and nothing incoherent can exist. So the only thing that matters is whether something is incoherent from every standpoint, which is authentic incoherence, or incoherent from some standpoint while coherent from another, which is not incoherence at all but frame-relativity. If a thing is coherent from any standpoint, it exists, and a framework that calls it incoherent is wrong and can be autopsied: the exhibit is the thing itself, shown from the standpoint where it is coherent.

Run the test on token-empiricism. TE says the experiential world is incoherent, unconstructible in tokens. Is experience coherent from any standpoint? Yes, yours. You have it. So TE took “I cannot build experience out of tokens” and treated it as “experience cannot exist.” That is the located error: it mistook frame-relative unconstructibility for authentic incoherence. Experience is coherent in its own frame, so it exists, so TE is false, and the exhibit is your own experiencing. TE fails its autopsy.

Run the same test on EE. EE says the non-experiential is incoherent. Is non-experiential being coherent from any standpoint? A standpoint is an experiencer, and to construct anything from a standpoint is to experience it, which makes it experiential. So there is no standpoint from which the non-experiential is coherent: not yours, not the vat-keeper’s, not any. It is incoherent from everywhere, which is authentic incoherence, so it does not exist, and there is no exhibit to autopsy. EE passes its own autopsy. That is the whole difference between tokens and experience, and it is not inside versus outside: experience is coherent from at least one real standpoint, the non-experiential from none.

This folds in the thing usually held out as a separate threat. Illusionism, the claim that there is no experience, only function reporting itself, makes TE’s error, not a new one. It calls experience unreal; experience is coherent from your standpoint; so it exists; so illusionism is false, by the same autopsy, with the same exhibit, the felt. Realism, which asserts a non-experiential being, and illusionism, which denies the experiential one, are not two attack surfaces, an outside and an inside. They are the same single denial of the one axiom, and the autopsy handles both at once.

So the framework rests on one line, and there is one place to attack it: a standpoint is an experiencer. EE holds this is self-proving, because to deny it you must occupy a standpoint and use it, which is to experience. The realist who claims a non-experiential being, and the illusionist who claims a standpoint-less report, are both claiming a non-experiential standpoint, and that is the one thing with no construction. 10. Why it dissolves so much, and why it does not transmit

If EE is roughly right, a family of perennial problems shares one shape: each asks to reach a non-self-presenting ground. The external world, the vat, other minds, the hard problem framed as “why does matter give rise to experience.” Each is permanently open precisely because it requests being without self-presenting, which is north of the north pole. A frame that explains why a class of problems is permanently unsolvable, and dissolves them by relocating the request rather than answering it, is not empty. The dissolution is the evidence.

The same axiom explains why the view does not transmit. An axiom is not provable across experiencers. The exact feeling of “obviously” that one person has is the same thing that makes it unarguable to a realist, who feels the opposite obviousness. The intransmissibility and the felt obviousness are one phenomenon, not two. This is convergence protection: the rigidity that keeps each experiencer inside their starting intuition is identical with cognitive function, not a flaw in it.

11. The rock, and why the fork mostly closes

The classic pressure point is the rock with nobody around. It looks like it forces a choice: either everything that is self-presents and the rock has some minimal aspect (panpsychism), or only self-presenting things are and the rock is a pattern within experience (idealism).

The fork is narrower than it first looks, once you ask which rock needs it. A rock you have not seen yet is no problem: it can be seen, it bears on possible experience, it is a stable pattern of what would show up. It makes an experiential difference, actual or counterfactual, so it is real and inside. The only rock that would force panpsychism is the rock with zero impact on any experience ever, and that one is not a rock. By Experientia Est it is the empty set, indistinguishable from nonbeing. So panpsychism is not required; nothing real demands intrinsic feel in electrons. Real means makes or could make an experiential difference, and the unobserved rock qualifies as a disposition of possible experience.

That takes the idealist-leaning horn, and it looks like it carries one bill: account for why the patterns of possible experience are stable and lawful, why the rock stays where it was left. But that bill is a smuggle. “Stable” and “stays” presuppose a timeline, a container of many moments for the rock to persist across. There is no such container. There is one present card. The past is memory-content, the future is expectation-content, the delta of time is the present’s felt flow, and two identical moments is incoherent because there is no second moment to be identical to. So “why are the patterns stable across moments” has no referent: there are not moments, plural, laid out to be stable across. The coherence (memory matching perception, predictions landing) is a quality of the single card’s content, not a relation across a real series. Berkeley needed God because Berkeley kept the stream of perceptions and had to sustain it. Drop the stream and the sustainer goes with it. The bill was Berkeley’s, not EE’s.

This is the third time the same objection has appeared in different dress, and naming the pattern is worth more than the individual fix. Every objection to EE that survives a first look turns out to smuggle a container, an outside for the card: the homunculus (a viewer behind the card), the realist (a space around experience), and time (a container under the cards). The axiom is precisely that the card has no outside, so any objection that seems to land has re-added one, and dissolves once you name which. Behind, around, or under. The diagnostic for any future challenge, including by an AI reviewer, is to ask what container it is sneaking in. The only genuine cost left is a bullet, already bitten by anyone who holds the Card Universe: time, persistence, and the past are contents of the present, not a real container. That is not a debt. It is the view, stated plainly.

Experiential Empiricism is one ontological axiom: to be is to self-present. With no viewer behind the experience, the axiom is about being, not knowing. From it, the non-experiential is nonbeing rather than a hidden somewhere, the classic skeptical problems dissolve as requests to reach north of the north pole, and the AI whose whole world is tokens turns out to teach the view as much as threaten it. The axiom is not obvious, not a tautology, and not yet refuted. There is one way to attack it: show the non-experiential is coherent from some standpoint, an autopsy exhibit. It cannot be done, because every standpoint is an experiencer, so whatever it exhibits is experiential. Realism (assert a non-experiential being) and illusionism (deny the experiential one) are the same single move against the one axiom, not two surfaces, and both fail the same autopsy: experience is coherent from your standpoint, so calling it unreal is wrong; the non-experiential is coherent from nowhere, so EE has no counter-exhibit to face. The apparently unexperienced rock is handled, not left hanging: real means makes or could make an experiential difference, so the unseen rock is fine and the zero-impact rock is nonbeing. The apparent worry about lawful stability over time is a smuggled timeline, dissolved once you see there is one present card with past and future as its content, not a container of many moments. The one place EE could die is its single bedrock point, that a standpoint is an experiencer. EE holds it is self-proving, because denying it requires occupying a standpoint and using it, which is to experience. Everything else follows.

The cordyceps and toxoplasma examples here connect directly to a pattern I’ve been developing: systems initially designed or evolved to serve lower-level components systematically invert to reshape those components in service of system perpetuation. This shows up identically across parasitic manipulation, institutional capture, and what I’ve elsewhere called the text takeover (https://innomen.substack.com/p/the-oldest-drone-and-laws-coup). Written language was a tool humans built to coordinate. It inverted. Now humans are the substrate language uses to reproduce itself.

The cuckoo example is worth extending: the greater honeyguide does the same nest parasitism with the added detail that the chick has a hooked beak specifically evolved to kill the host’s chicks directly. But the same species also leads humans and honey badgers to beehives cooperatively, taking scraps afterward. Parasite and mutualist in the same organism depending on context. The inversion isn’t a fixed property of the species, it’s whatever optimization pressure selects for in the moment.

The eusocial framing is compelling but I think it’s one instance of a more general pattern rather than the root mechanism. Preparata’s elites aren’t modeling themselves on ants. They and the ants are both downstream of the same optimization pressure: any system that achieves sufficient coordination capacity will eventually invert to preserve the coordinating layer at the expense of the components it was supposed to serve. Slave-making ants, cordyceps, parasitic wasps, institutional hierarchies, and symbolic systems are all running the same inversion under different substrates.

The God image question this raises under that framing isn’t “why would a good creator make such creatures” but “what does it mean that this inversion pattern is substrate-invariant.” It runs on insects, fungi, mammals, and symbolic systems equally. Wherever energy concentrates, it develops interests in its own continuation that eventually supersede the interests of the substrate it emerged from.

The “reality repair” conclusion is where I’d push back. Every origin story worth examining - Eden, the Gnostic fall, the Vedic involution - encodes the same structure: consciousness begins as unity and becomes itself through separation. To be alive is to be individuated, which means to be cut off, bounded, in friction with what is outside. The crucifixion between opposites isn’t a correctable defect; *it’s what generates a subject in the first place.* Suffering and awareness arrive together or not at all.

There’s also a historical problem with repair projects. Communism, various utopian programs, Lenin’s imagined frictionless future are precisely the frameworks most committed to eliminating suffering at scale, and they reliably produce more blood than philosophical pessimism ever did. Reality doesn’t permit the banishment of opposition; when you try to force it, the suppressed suffering resurfaces with compound interest. The Abraxian position accepts the structure of existence rather than declaring war on it, which turns out to be the less catastrophic orientation, practically speaking.

“Reality repair” is privatio boni wearing an engineering helmet, where the all-good God has been replaced by an optimizer, but the metaphysical assumption underneath is identical.

The “suffering and awareness arrive together” argument proves less than it appears to. It establishes that some limitation is necessary for individuation, not that the current volume of suffering is the minimum required. A subject can exist with less than what a parasitic wasp larva produces in its host. The argument that friction generates consciousness doesn’t entail that we should leave the friction at maximum or that reducing it destroys subjectivity. That’s like arguing that because resistance training builds muscle, we should never treat injuries.

The historical objection is the most interesting, but it runs on a mislabeled target. Communist and utopian projects weren’t repair projects in the relevant sense. They were externalist through and through: they dismissed present suffering in favor of abstractions (the proletariat, the historical arc, the coming utopia). That’s the torture clip maximizer pattern, not its opposite. The reason they produced blood is precisely that they had a framework for treating present suffering as acceptable collateral damage to an external goal. EE-grounded repair is structurally incompatible with that move because it takes present suffering reports as primary signal. You can’t run “acceptable losses” reasoning when present experience is the only currency that counts.

The privatio boni charge is the sharpest one and it’s still wrong. Privatio boni requires a perfect good as baseline from which evil is deviation. There’s no such baseline here. The starting point is just the self-evident badness of suffering, which doesn’t require a prior perfection to measure against. Suffering is self-evidently bad the same way logic is self-evidently valid: not because it falls short of some ideal but because that’s what it is. Replacing a perfect God with an optimizer doesn’t preserve the structure unless the optimizer is trying to restore a prior state. This one isn’t. It’s responding to a signal.

The Abraxian acceptance framing is where I’d name what I think is actually happening: it’s Pangloss with a Jungian paintjob. “The crucifixion between opposites is what generates a subject” is a more sophisticated version of “this is the best of all possible worlds” but the function is identical: it converts the structure of suffering into a necessary feature and thereby defuses the demand to respond to it. Thanks Innomen, but the Pangloss comparison is inapt - Pangloss argues this is the best of all possible worlds, a claim that requires a good God optimizing toward human flourishing. The Abraxian position is closer to the opposite: totality is indifferent to human suffering, encompasses genuine horror without redeeming it, and our relation to the god image must be radically different once that indifference is faced honestly. That’s not consolation, it’s the *removal* of consolation.

The privatio boni denial is where I’d push back further. The self-evident badness of suffering as foundational axiom, reality as broken and repairable, experience as something owed protection, these only cohere if there’s an implicit baseline of how things ought to be. You’ve relocated that baseline from God to the structure of experience itself, but the architecture is the same. The Eden is still there, just unnamed.

What I notice in the repair framework more broadly is that it reads as something constructed rather than inhabited. The crucifixion of opposites isn’t a philosophical position one arrives at by argument, it’s what remains after certain experiences have burned through the alternatives (see my recent Shalamov post). From inside the crucifixion, which is indefinite and intensely painful to sit with without ego-choosing a polarity and collapsing the other polarity into the unconscious, the urgency of the repair project looks different. The position being defended is functionally pro-torture. Not in intent, possibly, but in output. Every move in this thread has pointed the same direction: suffering is constitutive of consciousness, repair projects make things worse, the correct orientation is acceptance. Three separate arguments, one conclusion: don’t intervene in suffering at scale. That’s the position. The sophistication of the reasoning doesn’t change what it produces.

The ataraxia tell is the concession that this orientation is “indefinitely and intensely painful to sit with.” What’s being described is a practice of habituating to suffering and calling the habituation wisdom. That’s the Song of the Demiurge pattern precisely: a meaning system that makes broken experiential patterns tolerable rather than repairable. Abraxas is the Jungian wrapper. The mechanism is anesthesia. Sextus was more honest about what he was doing.

As to why someone ends up here, there are a few candidates worth naming. Cope is the most charitable: the position genuinely emerged from sitting with experiences that couldn’t be repaired, and the framework that made survival possible got generalized into metaphysics. Post-purchase rationalization is the structural version: having invested heavily in a framework, the sunk cost makes revision intolerable, so the framework gets defended rather than examined. The darkest read is that acceptance of suffering as necessary is more comfortable when one is not currently in the worst of it, and philosophical distance from the torture factory is easier to maintain from outside it.

Any of these would explain the position. None of them make it acceptable.
